VODAFONE WARRIORS RUGBY LEAGUE READS IN LIBRARIES PROGRAMME

As a major sponsor of the Vodafone Warriors, Konica Minolta was extremely proud to extend its support to include the ‘Rugby League Reads in Libraries’ programme.

Eight classes from the Auckland region were selected to participate in this important community initiative aimed at improving the literacy levels of school children aged 7-9 years.

To be considered for the programme, Year 4 and 5 classes were invited to enter a writing competition. Students were asked to submit a short story or poem incorporating their favourite Vodafone Warriors player. Class entries were judged against other Year 4 and 5 classes from throughout Auckland and the winning eight classes invited to join Warriors players and attend the Rugby League Reads in Libraries day to be held at one of four Auckland libraries during August.

“We launched 'Warriors Against Bullying' (WAB) as part of our commitment to make a contribution to the community through the club” said Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah. “With Rugby League Reads we’re trying to make a positive difference in a critical area of learning for children”.

Senior Vodafone Warriors player Michael Luck said it was vital for professional sports people to have a wider perspective on life. “Players need to have more in their lives than simply training and playing,” he said. “We all need balance and these programmes that help our young people have been a great opportunity to make a difference. Helping kids with literacy and encouraging them to enjoy reading is a really positive way to go.”

During each Library visit Vodafone Warrior players assisted children in completing literary activities at 4 stations set up around the library. They also handed out bookmarks, reading charts and books to the children participating.

Two New Zealand books “Henry & the Flea” byAuthor Brian Faulkner and “Papa’s Donuts” by Author Kate Moetaua were given to all children and schools involved in the programme. The eight selected schools also each received 2 x Canterbury Rugby League Balls and the student with the Best Overall Story/Poem will receive a signed 2009 Vodafone Warriors Rugby League Jersey.

The Rugby League Reads programme provides a fantastic opportunity for kiwi children to learn the valuable life skills of reading and writing with their favourite Warriors heroes.
